The treasure of trees surrounds me everywhere in Cary, NC. I'm an NC native and I can't say I've always been enamored by trees, but as an adult they have enhanced my life greatly. They are so majestic. Since there is a day to celebrate trees, Arbor day, and this year it happened to fall on World Tai Chi day (how cool is that!), I'd like to offer some history and wisdom from two of my favorite trees. From the voice of the Long Leaf Pine "I was born and raised on the sandy soil in the Southeast US. I've been harvested for Tar as most of my other pine family members have, and lately there has been growing recognition of how valuable I am for the ecosystem. I can adjust to periods of time without water, and I've learned how to bear the heat, even to the point of fire. In a forest I offer homes for several critters, and since my needles grow up high, I offer a large area for other green life to flourish under my "wings".
